(Red Sky is proud to once again align with the American Heart Association to raise awareness of heart health as part of their Go Red initiative. This year we are highlighting how working moms strive to stay healthy while balancing family, work and life.)

By Gloria Miller

Last December, Red Sky challenged all of its employees to start a goal, whether it was to lose weight, exercise more, eat healthier – it didn’t matter what it was, just something to make ourselves feel better and be more health conscious.  I decided to join Boise CrossFit and try my hand at a new workout regime, focused on strength and conditioning program described as “constantly varied, high intensity, functional movement.” What intrigued me the most was that it stated most of the workouts were 20 minutes or less = PERFECT!!

Don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t expecting this to be a walk in the park but I didn’t think it was going to be so INTENSE! I found myself doing things I never thought possible and pushing myself to the very brink of exhaustion.  Pushups, rope climbs, pull-ups, burpees, Olympic lifts, you name it, I was doing it and it was awesome. I saw my body start to transform in a matter of a two months.

Four months after starting CrossFit, we learned a baby was joining our family in November –there went my dreams of sipping cocktails at our pool in a bikini! What was great about CrossFit is that they have a program for expecting mothers, called CrossFit Moms. The moves and lifts are scaled down to accommodate mamas-to-be while still giving them a fulfilling workout.

Think CrossFit is just for the young guns?? Think again! Boise CrossFit has a Master’s Program specifically for mature older clients – mainly focused on balance, flexibility, strength and cardio-fitness. What’s amazing about CrossFit is that it’s the perfect workout, no matter what age or athletic ability.

I want to thank “Go Red” and Red Sky PR for urging us to get out there, try something new and most of all, find something fun that we love that doesn’t feel like exercise! Without the challenge from Red Sky, I would have never pushed myself to:

  • Try CrossFit
  • Become a CrossFit lover
  • Love to work out

With a baby coming soon, creating healthy habits like these will help inspire our whole family for years to come.
